8 reasons Charles Koch is the scariest man in America

Charles Koch

Scary because he claims “We don’t have the power to coerce anybody” while providing massive funding to organizations that attack public education, social programs, worker salaries, business regulations, and the environment.

Scary because he refers to himself with words like ‘integrity’ and ‘principles’ while saying “I want my fair share — and that’s all of it.”

Scary because he declares, “I want my legacy to be…a better way of life for…all Americans.” Here is some of the legacy of Charles Koch:

1. Environment

In Crossett, Arkansas, local waterways have been filled with toxic chemicals by the nearby Georgia-Pacific plant, a likely contributor to the surge in cancer and other illnesses in their community. A spokesman for Georgia-Pacific called the allegations “sensationalized.” But the EPA reported that the Crossett plant released 136,000 pounds of toxic chemicals to nearby waterways, and buried over 444,000 pounds in the soil to degrade. A USA Today study ranked Crossett in the top percentile of communities for schoolchildren’s exposure to cancer-causing chemicals.

More recently, the besieged city of Detroit has become the dumping ground for a three-story pile of petroleum coke covering an entire city block near the Detroit River. The pile is owned by Koch Carbon, a company controlled by Charles and David Koch. The mound of toxic matter has been spewing thick black “fugitive dust” over the homes of nearby residents.

Koch Industries was ranked as one of the top air polluters by the Political Economy Research Institute.

2. Government

Rampant cronyism threatens the economic foundations that have made this the most prosperous country in the world. — Charles Koch

In a 2012 essay Charles Koch further criticized crony capitalism, saying “This growing partnership between business and government is a destructive force, undermining not just our economy and our political system, but the very foundations of our culture.” Yet Koch Industries is one of the biggest beneficiaries of oil subsidies and government contracts. According to the Center for Responsive Politics, the company has spent an average of almost $12 million per year from 2008 to 2012 on oil and gas industry lobbying.

There’s more. Over 100 bills introduced in 2013, backed by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) and heavily funded by the Kochs, seek to drive down wages, benefits, and worker rights.

3. Social Needs

The Nation reported that free-market libertarian Charles Koch coached economist Friedrich Hayek in the acquisition of publicly-funded retirement insurance and health care. Said Koch, “You are entitled to Social Security payments [and to] hospital coverage.”

Koch-funded organizations like The Heritage Foundation, The Cato Institute, and The Reason Foundation oppose Social Security, climate change science, gay marriage, and the Affordable Care Act.

4. Inequality

If you earn over $34,000 a year, you are one of the wealthiest 1% in the world. — Koch Foundation

With stunning condescension toward lower-income Americans who are one emergency away from financial collapse, the Charles Koch Foundation recently released a commercial that ranked a near-poverty-level $34,000 family among the Top 1% in the world. The Economic Policy Institute calculated that a U.S. family of three would require an average of about $48,000 a year to meet basic needs.

5. Minimum Wage

The minimum wage often hurts workers with the least experience. — EconomicFreedom.org, Charles Koch Institute

Charles Koch wants to eliminate the minimum wage, apparently believing that “economic freedom” applies to people struggling to survive on a minimum wage annual income of $14,500. He sermonizes, “Anything that people with limited capital can do to raise themselves up, they keep throwing obstacles in their way. And so we’ve got to clear those out. Or the minimum wage. Or anything that reduces the mobility of labor.”

Regarding that $14,500 per year, each Koch brother made that much from his 2012 investment income in 17 seconds at the office.

6. Education

The Koch Brothers’ contribution of millions of dollars to higher education, at first glance a magnanimous gesture, betrays less noble motives upon examination. The funding comes with a stipulation for control over faculty hiring and curriculum. As an extension of think tank media control, Koch’s surreptitious entry into over 150 colleges has guided academic decisions toward a libertarian, Ayn-Rand-like philosophy. As an example, an agreement with Florida State University stated, “Professorship Positions will be recruited and hired in a manner consistent with both the…Faculty Handbook and CGK Foundation’s intent to support the…Program.”

7. Taxes

I believe my business and non-profit investments are much more beneficial to societal well-being than sending more money to Washington. — Charles Koch

Charles Koch may believe he can best decide how people should live. He insists that “Much of what the government spends money on does more harm than good.” But as ThinkProgress notes, Koch’s investments “at best advance Koch’s political ideology and at worst misinform American voters. Either way, they are hardly a replacement for ‘government spend[ing]’ on things like food assistance and basic medical service.”

8. Business Ethics

Charles Koch offered a definition of integrity: “When the other person is vulnerable and you’re in a position to take advantage of them and you don’t do it.”

According to a 1989 report by the Senate Committee on Indian Affairs, “Koch Oil, the largest purchaser of Indian oil in the country, was engaged in a widespread and sophisticated scheme to steal crude oil from Indians and others through fraudulent mismeasuring and reporting.”

Charles elaborated on his business management philosophy: “Every leader needs to be a role model for these principles, because people will spot hypocrisy a mile away.”

Sun will flip its magnetic field in 3-4 months, warns NASA

sun

Major changes are about to take place with regards to the sun, and the effects of these changes will reportedly impact our entire solar system. It is known systematically as a solar magnetic flip, or a reversal of the sun’s magnetic field, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) says this incredible phenomenon is set to occur as soon as within the next three-to-four months.A recent NASA announcement explains that this unusual magnetic field reversal is part of a polarity change event that occurs every 11 years at the peak of each individual solar cycle. When this next magnetic flip eventually takes place, it will mark the midpoint of Solar Cycle 24, or the half point of what is known as the current “Solar Max.” And you and I will notice it, say experts, in the form of increased space weather and other space events around planet Earth.”It looks like we’re no more than three to four months away from a complete field reversal,” says Todd Hoeksema, director of Stanford University’s Wilcox Solar Observatory, in a recent statement about the event. “The magnetic field from active regions makes its way toward the poles and eventually causes the reversal. This change will have ripple effects throughout the solar system.”As it turns out, the extent of the sun’s magnetic influence, also known as its “heliosphere,” is incredibly large, extending out beyond Pluto, the furthest planet from the sun. Polarity changes, such as a magnetic field reversal, have the potential to significantly alter the pattern of the sun’s “current sheet,” the surface that jets out from the sun’s equator and induces electrical currents in its magnetic field.

Upcoming magnetic reversal will actually help protect earth, say experts

During this upcoming pole flip, the sun’s current sheet will become extra wavy. Since the Earth orbits the sun based on the movements of the current sheet, the Earth will also become more wavy, as will the space weather surrounding Earth. Cosmic rays, for instance, will behave differently when encountering a wavier current sheet, which could affect the normal cloudiness and climate of Earth. The wavier the current sheet, the better protected earth will be from damaging cosmic rays.”The sun’s polar magnetic fields weaken, go to zero, and then emerge again with the opposite polarity,” adds Phil Scherrer, a solar physicist at Stanford. “The sun’s north pole has already changed sign, while the south pole is racing to catch up. Soon, however, both poles will be reversed, and the second half of Solar Max will be underway.”Experts claim solar magnetic flips are a perfectly normal part of the solar life-cycle process. But they are still unable to fully explain how or why they work, especially when they lead to varying solar and space activity each time they occur. In years past, for instance, magnetic field reversals have led to massive increases in solar flares and ejections. But this time around, the sun appears to be relatively calm and quiet, at least so far.”The polar fields have been getting weaker and weaker over the last 30 years, and so also the following sunspot cycles have been getting weaker over the years,” says Hoeksema. “We don’t really understand why, or even if that’s the cause or if they’re both symptoms of the same thing. It’s a fun and interesting puzzle.

The Rise Of The Bear: 18 Signs That Russia Is Rapidly Catching Up To The United States

Michael Synder — The Economic Collapse August 7, 2013

The Russian Bear is stronger and more powerful than it has ever been before.  Sadly, most Americans don’t understand this.  They still think of Russia as an “ex-superpower” that was rendered almost irrelevant when the Cold War ended.  And yes, when the Cold War ended Russia was in rough shape.  I got the chance to go over there in the early nineties, and at the time Russia was an economic disaster zone.  Russian currency was so worthless that I joked that I could go exchange a 20 dollar bill and buy the Kremlin.  But since that time Russia has roared back to life.  Once Vladimir Putin became president, the Russian economy started to grow very rapidly.  Today, Russia is an economic powerhouse that is blessed with an abundance of natural resources.  Their debt to GDP ratio is extremely small, they actually run a trade surplus every year, and they have the second most powerful military on the entire planet.  Anyone that underestimates Russia at this point is making a huge mistake.  The Russian Bear is back, and today it is a more formidable adversary than it ever was at any point during the Cold War.

Just check out the following statistics.  The following are 18 signs that Russia is rapidly catching up to the United States…

#1 Russia produces more oil than anyone else on the planet. The United States is in third place.

#2 Russia is the number two oil exporter in the world.  The United States is forced to import more oil than anyone else in the world.

#3 Russia produces more natural gas than anyone else on the planet.  The United States is in second place.

#4 Today, Russia supplies 34 percent of Europe’s natural gas needs.

#5 The United States has a debt to GDP ratio of 101 percent.  Russia has a debt to GDP ratio of about 8 percent.

#6 The United States had a trade deficit of more than half a trillion dollars last year.  Russia consistently runs a large trade surplus.

#7 The United States has an unemployment rate of 7.4 percent.  Russia has an unemployment rate of 5.4 percent.

#8 Since Vladimir Putin first became president of Russia, the Russian economy has grown at a very rapid pace.  The following is from Wikipedia

Under the presidency of Vladimir Putin Russia’s economy saw the nominal Gross Domestic Product (GDP) double, climbing from 22nd to 11th largest in the world. The economy made real gains of an average 7% per year (1999: 6.5%, 2000: 10%, 2001: 5.7%, 2002: 4.9%, 2003: 7.3%, 2004: 7.2%, 2005: 6.4%, 2006: 8.2%, 2007: 8.5%, 2008: 5.2%), making it the 6th largest economy in the world in GDP(PPP). In 2007, Russia’s GDP exceeded that of 1990, meaning it has overcome the devastating consequences of the recession in the 1990s.

During Putin’s eight years in office, the industry grew by 75%, investments increased by 125%, and agricultural production and construction increased as well. Real incomes more than doubled and the average salary increased eightfold from $80 to $640. The volume of consumer credit between 2000–2006 increased 45 times, and during that same time period, the middle class grew from 8 million to 55 million, an increase of 7 times. The number of people living below the poverty line also decreased from 30% in 2000 to 14% in 2008.

#9 According to Bloomberg, Russia has added 570 metric tons of gold to their reserves over the past decade.  In the United States, nobody seems to be quite sure how much gold the Federal Reserve actually has left.

#10 Moscow is the second most expensive city in the world.  Meanwhile, the United States actually has the unfriendliest city in the world (Newark, New Jersey).

#11 More billionaires live in Moscow than in any other city on the globe.

#12 The Moscow metro system completely outclasses the subway systems in Washington D.C. and New York City.

#13 The United States has the most powerful military on the planet, but Russia is in second place.

#14 Russia has introduced a new “near silent” nuclear submarine which is far more quiet than anything the U.S. has…

The Borey Class submarine, dubbed Vladimir Monomakh, has a next generation nuclear reactor, can dive deeper than 1,200 feet, and carries up to 20 nuclear intercontinental ballistic missiles (ICBM).

Each of these “Bulava” ICBM’s can carry ten detachable MIRV warheads, what they call “re-entry vehicles,” capable of delivering 150 kiloton yields per warhead

#15 While Barack Obama is neutering the U.S. strategic nuclear arsenal, Vladimir Putin is working hard to modernize Russian nuclear forces.

#16 Russian missile forces will hold more than 200 drills during the second half of 2013.

#17 Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin made headlines all over the world when he climbed into the cockpit of Russia’s new “fifth generation” fighter jet and announced that it was far superior to the F-22 Raptor.

#18 It is estimated that Russia has more spies inside the United States today than it did at any point during the Cold War.

Unfortunately, whenever I write an article about Russia I find that most people simply do not get it.  They will make statements such as “the Cold War is over” or “Russia is our friend” which show a complete and total lack of understanding of the current geopolitical situation.

Russia has been steadily building a stronger relationship with China, and collectively they represent the number one strategic threat to the United States.

Someday this will become abundantly clear to the American people.  Hopefully it will not be too late by the time they realize it.

CCTV: Bear moonwalks with trash can from restaurant in US

A foraging black bear has been caught on CCTV dragging away a bin full of old food from behind a restaurant in Colorado Springs, in the US state of Colorado. The restaurant is now working on measures to deter the bear from another food heist.

Published on Aug 2, 2013

A bear is caught on camera standing on its hind legs and pushing a large bin filled with leftovers from a restaurant car park.
A brazen bear has been caught on camera serving itself a takeaway – by pushing a bin full of leftover German food from car park of a US restaurant.

The animal has made repeat visits to the Edelweiss restaurant in Colorado Springs, where security cameras have caught it tucking into waste food.

During a Wednesday morning visit to the back door of the restaurant the bear pulled a bin about 15 metres, flipped the container over and opened the lid to eat food tossed out the night before.

The Edelweiss signature dish is rouladen – steak pounded and rolled, stuffed with bacon, mustard, onions and pickle, covered in a dark gravy and accompanied by red cabbage and fried potatoes.
Bear Staff have been warned to be careful when putting out rubbish

“There’s some fresh, really good food attracting the bear,” said Edelweiss manager Dieter Schnakenberg.

“She passes up the recycling bin and goes right for the good stuff.”

Mr Schnakenberg estimates the bear to be over two-metres tall when it stands on its hind legs, and staff have now been warned to be careful as they go to and from the bins.

The bear enjoyed the meal so much that it showed up again early Thursday.
Bear The bin is likely to be chained up and locked in future

The restaurant is about two miles south of downtown Colorado Springs, and the bear is likely following the Cheyenne Creek into the neighbourhood, Mr Schnakenberg said.

“We’re going to have to do something to stop the bear visits,” he added.

The restaurant’s management is considering using chains to anchor the bins to a nearby fence. Using a locking lid could be another option to thwart the repeat offender.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife division spokesman Randy Hampton said: “The best case scenario is they secure the dumpster and the bear doesn’t come back.”

Wildlife officials discourage people from purposely feeding bears.

“It creates a very dangerous situation, mostly for the bear,” Mr Hampton said. “None of it ends well for the bear.”
